So What is Raku ?

Raku in its modern idiom as practised in Europe, and the USA, is a fast firing technique that produces unique crackle, and lustre glaze effects, highlighted by smoking the pottery wares as they cool.

This is usually done with very simple home made gas, or wood fired,  kilns, fired to between 950 to 1000 degree’s centigrade.

The origins of modern Raku pottery are in the rapid firing process used for creating cups and bowls for the Japanese tea ceremony
